The level of moisture in the air heavily influences how quickly waterborne paint dries. Compared to oil-based or alkyd paints that rely on evaporation of chemical solvents, water-based formulations use water as their primary carrier. This means that the drying process is closely tied to the speed of water vapor release from the paint film into the surrounding air. When humidity is high, the air is already saturated with moisture, impeding the water in the paint to evaporate. As a result, drying times become dramatically prolonged. Under conditions exceeding 70% RH, it can take as much as 100% longer for the paint to dry compared to conditions at 50% RH or lower.
In dry conditions generally speeds up drying. Low-moisture environments enhance evaporation, allowing the water in the paint to evaporate more quickly. Yet, very dry air can sometimes cause problems too. If the paint dries too fast on the surface while the underneath is still wet, it can lead to checking or film delamination. This phenomenon is most pronounced on unsealed substrates or in high-temperature, low-RH environments where evaporation happens excessively fast.
Temperature also interacts with humidity to affect drying. Higher temperatures increase air’s moisture capacity, so despite elevated moisture levels, warm temperatures can help drying.
